There are usually 9 options, and she has to choose four. This week (in October) her class was learning about the weather, and one of the homework options was to make "Jello Skies" - so obviously, it was a must do.

To make them, we first prepared a package of blue Jello (I think it was blueberry) and let it partially gel. We then "raked" it with forks and layered it in small clear cups with Cool Whip - blue skies and fluffy white clouds.
It was on a Sunday afternoon on the same weekend that we went to Dallas to go to the Fair, but the kids were really excited about it (Sno cones! Pony rides! Petting zoo! Bounce house!), so we made sure that we got back in time. We had a lot of fun!
In September, a few of my 23 classmates met up in Sterling City for our 20 year high school reunion. Robert and I made a detour on our way to my family's land in Santa Anna. We enjoyed the views of the hills, but the rattlesnake...not so much.

As we got close to Sterling City, the familiar landscapes made me feel somewhat nostalgic, but it was also interesting to see how different everything looked with the wind farm boom. Love those open West Texas skies!

We met up with my old friends at the football game on Friday night. It was my first time in the stadium, and in Sterling City, since our 10 year reunion. The high school now plays 6 man football, and they were dominating the game - it was called at halftime - so we only saw a few minutes of the game. Afterwards we hung out for awhile in one of the hotel rooms, just catching up.

The next morning Robert and I drove around the town. This was Robert's first trip to my hometown, so he got to see the places of my childhood - our home, the streets where I rode my bike, friends' houses, my church, etc. We met up with my classmates at the park for a picnic lunch, then went to watch my friend Jodi's girls play in their volleyball game. After the game, the principal (who was also in school with us!) gave us a tour of the school. I was surprised to see that some of my math team's plaques and trophies were still in the trophy case, and our class composite was still on the wall.

One of the highlights of the tour was the new ag complex, complete with a deer processing area that the students use to raise money for the program. Welcome to small town West Texas!

Although there were only a few of us able to make it, I really enjoyed the time I was able to spend with each one of them. We got to really talk and share some old memories as well as new ones. I hope we do it again before another 10 years pass!

It was interesting to see their process, and the kids particularly enjoyed seeing some of the Budweiser Clydesdales.

At the end of the tour, we were directed to the Biergarten where we offered a full size sample. I tried an apple wheat ale, and Claire thought it smelled really good. She kept asking to sniff it. :)

We ate lunch at a small taco joint, and then Grandmommy and Granddaddy Martin left to return to Herrin while we went back to the hotel to rest. We spent some time just driving around, exploring St. Louis, and after dinner, we were all ready for a treat. My friend Maria used to live in St. Louis, and she recommended visiting Ted Drewes. It was hot, and the lines were long, but we enjoyed our custard!
We flew home on Sunday morning. It was an uneventful trip, and we were glad we made it on time - we need to prepare for a family dinner and the first day of school!
Martin's family had told us we should check out the City Museum, so we went there that morning. You guys. When we planned this trip, we thought this might be our only time to visit St. Louis. After visiting this museum, we decided we definitely need to come back someday. One of the coolest and most indescribable man-made places we've been. So. Much. Fun.
When we got in, we went straight up to the rooftop to check it out before it got hot.

Inside, there was so much to see and do. We spent all morning there, went for lunch, and then came back for a couple more hours. We could have easily stayed all day if we hadn't been worn out by all of the climbing and exploring. :)

A favorite for all of us was the Monster Slide - a 3 story slide at the entrance.

We flew into St. Louis on a Wednesday (the 20th), got our rental car, and drove to Carbondale, IL to meet Martin's family for their weekly Wednesday night dinner at Quatro's. The pizza was delicious, especially after a long day of travel.

The next morning Grandmommy met us at Giant City State Park for some hiking. It was beautiful with lush ferns and trees and interesting rock formations - it was a great place to explore with the kids.

We grabbed lunch at the park lodge, stopped at the mall to pick out some gifts, then went back to the hotel to rest and clean up. That evening we drove to Herrin, Martin's hometown. We got to see the house he grew up in before joining lots of family and friends to celebrate Grandma Jane's birthday with dinner and cake at Mary's. We especially loved seeing all of the photos from Grandma Jane's life and hearing lots of stories about Martin and his siblings. :) I'm so glad we were able to be there!

From August:

We got in one more visit to Sea World with some good friends before school started:

Top row: (1) Impromptu dinner out with some friends from Life Group after the power went out in our area - we definitely made the best of not being able to use our kitchens! (2)-(3) Another "last visit for the summer" - playing at the McKenna Children's Museum in New Braunfels.

Middle row: (1) All Claire wants for First Grade is her two - wait, make that FOUR - front teeth! She lost four teeth in a span of 10 days - crazy! (2) Working together on a computer game at the children's area of the library (3) Will built a big castle in his classroom at church before everyone else got there (I was working in his class that day), and he asked for a photo beside it before he knocked it all down. :)

Bottom row: (1) Thursday afternoon, first week of school. Claire was insisting that she wasn't tired, but I suggested that she go lay down for a few minutes. She was out for a good nap, and still went to bed easily that night. First week wipes everyone out! (2) At the park with Will. He loved showing me how high he could climb. (3) A comfy (???) spot on the couch.Amy Lhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15021884953531114529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36987642.post-30633288649878802252014-08-27T15:50:00.001-05:002014-08-27T15:50:14.401-05:00Claire's First Day of First GradeWe have a first grader!

The night before, Claire had an unusually difficult time falling asleep, and I got to sing, rock, and lay down with her to try to help her relax for the first time in years. While I was sorry that she was a little anxious, I enjoyed those sweet moments with her. Despite the lack of sleep, she popped right out of bed and was ready to go. Will spent the night with my parents, so we were able to totally focus on Claire and get some photos.

The first day this year was so easy - we knew where we were going and we saw lots of familiar faces. We weren't able to go to Meet the Teacher night the week before since we were out of town, but we were familiar with her teacher (we got the one we wanted!), and Claire already knew where the first grade classes were located.

While Will and I miss having her with us during the day, she has had a wonderful week and is excited to go to school each day. We're looking forward to a great year!Amy Lhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15021884953531114529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36987642.post-32936585050332849852014-08-27T15:41:00.001-05:002014-08-27T15:41:26.906-05:00Second Annual Back to School DinnerLast year we began a new family tradition of going out to dinner the night before school begins. Like her mother, Claire appears to take tradition seriously, and she wanted to go to the same place (California Pizza Kitchen) and invited the same group (our immediate family, my parents, and my cousin Jonathan) as last year.

She even choose the same dessert - a chocolate souffle cake with ice cream (at least this year Will didn't cry while having to wait for me to take a picture).

July 2 - A playdate at the Bulverde park with Grace and Jacob. The little splash pad was big fun!

The last swim lesson at Aqua Tots! It was a lot of fun, but we decided to take a break for awhile.

July 4 - For our trip to Dallas, I got each kid a book (Frozen for Claire and a dragon guide to How to Train Your Dragon for Will) along with the Dragon movie. Will immediately became obsessed with the book and can now recite the entire thing from memory - and it's a Level 2, so it's not short.

July 15 - We got a lot of rain today, and when I got home from picking up the kids from their summer fun program, I noticed that all 3 of our garbage cans had rolled down the hill. Fortunately a service truck at the neighbor's house stopped them from going all the way down the street!

July 26 - We are getting ready to have the interior of our house repainted, so Claire and I found some bedding that we both liked before we repaint. We are both excited to see the final result soon.

July 29 - This evening I let the kids play with their new water guns. Will really liked spraying himself - silly kid!

July 30 - We went up to Bulverde this morning to drop off some meals for a fellow MOPS member who just had a baby, so it was a good chance for us to play at the splash pad at the local park. Claire and Will had so much fun in the water - beautiful day!
Last Monday night (June 21st), she told me one was loose, so we'd started keeping an eye on it. When I picked her up from summer program on Tuesday, she told me it was really loose. I said "Do you want me to try to pull it for you?" She said "I'll try it. Oh! There it is!"

The matching one on the other side came out a few days later.

Robert and I had been talking about setting up a consultation with another dentist to check her two front top teeth. They've always been small, and since her bottom two permanent teeth came in last year, they'd really worn down the two top ones. Then yesterday she got a funny look on her face and told me she had another loose tooth. I checked, and both of her front teeth were wiggling. Finally!

Today she couldn't stop wiggling one of them. I checked this morning, and it wasn't budging easily, so I suggested leaving it alone for awhile. That advice was ignored. :) The kids went over to my parents house for a couple of hours this afternoon while I took care of some volunteer stuff, and on our way home, she told me she was going to pull it. I was driving and couldn't stop her - I heard "Ow! Ow! Ow! There it is!" She may be little, but she is tough and brave!

Three teeth gone in 8 days. I love her little Jack O Lantern grin!Amy Lhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15021884953531114529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36987642.post-70483634558850226602014-07-29T16:06:00.002-05:002014-07-29T16:06:45.033-05:00Zoo Day and MilkshakesIt had been awhile since our last visit to the zoo, so Claire, Will and I headed down there on Friday. I decided it would be a day of "Yes" - "Yes!" to the butterfly garden, "Yes!" to a ride on the carousel, "Yes!" to lunch at the Zoo Cafe, "Yes!" to a train ride, and finally, "Yes!" to milkshakes afterwards. I think the only "No" was to toys at the gift shop. :)

We had a really fun day with only one hiccup. As we walked through Africa Live, Will climbed up on one of the planters (because he tried to climb up and jump off of everything in sight). I asked him to please get down, and when he jumped off, he landed funny on a crack in the sidewalk and fell pretty hard on his knees. When I picked him up, I realized one of his knees was cut and bleeding. We were close to a small shop, so we walked over for some napkins. They had some antiseptic wipes and Neosporin and called to have someone bring some Band Aids, so we got him fixed up pretty quickly and were on our way again. Glad it was an easy fix!

Earlier in the summer when Claire and I were talking about fun things we should do this summer, one of the things that we agreed on was going to get milkshakes. One of my favorite childhood memories from a vacation to San Antonio was getting milkshakes at the Olmos Pharmacy's old-fashioned lunch counter. The Olmos Pharmacy is still around and is close to the zoo, but I was a little disappointed to see that while the building and the lunch counter were there, the actual pharmacy and store is gone. Everything except the lunch counter has been stripped out, and the building is just used for food and live music. The kids didn't know any different, though, and were still really excited to get to sit at the counter and watch the server make their chocolate milkshake. It was delicious, and I was glad that I got to get them a special treat!
First stop was Krispy Kreme for donuts - Robert texted me this picture of Will's chocolate donut face.

Next they had a playdate in the park with Elliot and Jack - Courtney was hosting an essential oils class, so Josh and the boys were also looking to get out of the house.
Lunch, naps, and dinner at Nana and Granddaddy's house finished off their day. I'm so glad they all had a good day while I was with my friends.Amy Lhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15021884953531114529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36987642.post-16650682811532668272014-07-29T15:37:00.003-05:002014-07-29T15:37:36.740-05:00A&M Girls' WeekendI have an amazing group of friends from my time at A&M, and I love when we can make time in our busy schedules to spend time together catching up and reconnecting. In the days of social media, it's easier to know what each of our families have been up to, but it's nothing like seeing each other in person and getting to talk about how we are all actually doing.

These ladies have such a treasured place in my heart. I've made a lot of good friends since my time at A&M, but there is something special about being with a group of women who knew me before I was a mother, before I was a wife, before I had a career...and no matter how much time has passed since we've last seen each other, we can pick up right where we left off. I am so blessed!

Jill and Melissa arrived at Lindsay's house on Friday night, and I flew up on Saturday morning. They picked me up from the airport, and we met Courtney at the nail salon for pedicures. After some pampering, we treated ourselves to brunch at Breadwinners, another one of my favorite restaurants that I miss from our time in Dallas. We all commented that it felt so strange to not be checking our watches to make sure we were adhering to a schedule! Our day of leisure continued with some time at the mall and a movie (The Fault in Our Stars). Courtney had to leave us, and Jill, Melissa, Lindsay and I ate dinner at Gloria's before driving back to Lindsay's to relax over s'mores, a glass of wine, and another fun movie (Pitch Perfect).

Jill and I drove back to San Antonio on Sunday refreshed and ready to see our families. It was a wonderful weekend with good friends, good conversation, and good food. Hope we can do it again soon!!!Amy Lhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15021884953531114529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36987642.post-4403608773924635092014-07-29T13:03:00.000-05:002014-07-29T13:03:04.861-05:00Summer at Sea WorldWe went to Sea World twice in July. The first trip was just me and the kids. I wanted to make a point to see more shows on these visits, so for the first time, we saw the "Pets Ahoy" show, and it was a huge hit with the kids, especially our animal lover, Will. I particularly liked that it was air conditioned. :) It's a really cute show with dogs, cats, birds, pot belly pigs, and other animals, most of which are rescue animals. We also saw "Azul" with beluga whales, dolphins, and lots of acrobatics.

A big portion of our morning was spent at the splash pad. We don't get a lot of opportunities to play at splash pads, especially ones this big, so the kids always get excited to run around and get really wet.

After I dried them off and got them some lunch, we had time for a ride on the Shamu Express. On our last trip with Daddy, I checked and realized that Claire was tall enough to ride by herself, so I told them we could go on it if I could ride with Will and Claire rode in front of us. She was SO excited to get to ride alone - she likes being a big girl. :)

After the ride she told me that she smiled really big for the ride camera. So cute!

We got to go back the next week, this time with our sweet McCormick friends. We always love getting time with them. We saw 3 shows ("Cannery Row Caper" with sea lions and a huge walrus, "Azul" again, and the Shamu show), played in the splash pad, saw lots of animals, and rode the Shamu coaster again. I totally failed on the photo front - the only one I took was this one of Claire and Will (they wanted a picture with the seal).

Next time I'll get a photo of all four kids together!Amy Lhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15021884953531114529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36987642.post-88816611588025273252014-07-29T11:47:00.000-05:002014-07-29T11:47:04.021-05:00A Morning at Morgan's WonderlandOne of the kids' Christmas presents was a 10 visit pass to Morgan's Wonderland (thank you Jonathan!), a special family park here in San Antonio. Morgan's Wonderland was designed to be fully accessible to people of all abilities. We love it there, and we were excited to finally have a chance to go for another visit.

We had a wonderful time. One of the things I love about this park is that both kids can ride every ride and participate in every activity. We got there when it opened, and the crowd was very light, so we had our choice of activities. We saw and did almost everything, and even rode the carousel and the jeep rides twice each.

On this visit, the big hit for Claire and Will was the Pirate Island Playground. I think they would've stayed there the entire morning if I hadn't reminded them there were other things to see. I loved watching them play together for so long, encouraging each other to climb the big rock, then running over the ramps to slide down together.

In trying to take a picture of all 3 of us, I managed to get 3 very different photos of Will. He loves hamming it up for selfies!
It was HOT, but still worth the trip. I knew there was going to be a lot to see, but I was still surprised and impressed with the size and number of interesting activities and exhibits that were available.
Claire loved climbing the nets suspended from the treehouse over the trails below.

Such a great place to run and explore - I'm looking forward to going back someday (in the spring or fall!). For lunch we introduced the kids to one of our favorite places - Wild About Harry's. Claire had been as a baby, but she was too young for the hot dogs and custard. :) This photo of Will after lunch doesn't fully capture the streaks of ketchup, Cheetos, and chocolate custard smeared over his face and shirt, and he was too hyped up to stand still to take another picture. It's safe to say that his first visit was a big hit.

Full of hot dogs, chips, and custard, we drove to Arlington to visit with Ma & Bob for awhile before driving back to Dallas. Claire wanted to play the CD of songs from Backyard Bible Club, and the kids put on quite a show for their great grandparents.

After dinner, we got the kids cleaned up and into pjs so that we could just carry them into their beds when we got home. As usual, our weekend in Dallas was too short, but we had fun and made a lot of good memories on our mini-vacation.
This is one of our favorite zoos - they have several exhibits that we don't have at our local zoo, such as gorillas, giraffes, and baby elephants.

They had a special exhibit of large animatronic insects throughout the zoo, and the kids loved spotting them as we walked around. Many of the insects moved on their own, but their favorite was a beetle with buttons you could push to make different parts move.

While we were there, we ran into Robert's cousin Liz and her son John. Claire and Will met John for the first time at our family reunion in June, and they were excited to see him again. Such a nice surprise!

We lasted a couple of hours at the zoo, then went to Dutch's for lunch and back to the hotel for naps. The hotel has a big pool on the property with a lazy river, zipline, slides, etc., so we spent the rest of the afternoon swimming and playing in the water. That evening while I got the kids bathed and ready for bed, Robert picked up Grimaldi's Pizza, and we enjoyed a pizza picnic and a movie in our room before bed - a typical Saturday night for us!
There is never enough time to see everyone we want to see, do everything we want to do, and eat everywhere we want to eat, but we were able to fit in a lot over our long weekend!

On Thursday, we picked up Claire and Will a little early from their summer fun program at Will's preschool and headed out of town. The drive was uneventful, and we made our usual stop at Spring Creek Barbecue for dinner on the way. When we were making our plans, we decided to stay in a somewhat central location since we planned to spend time in both Dallas and Fort Worth, and we chose the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine. A lot of people had the same idea - it was packed that weekend. It was a good choice, though, for our stay - lots of places to walk around when the kids needed to burn off some energy, and they had some special events over the weekend, including a stilt man dressed up like Uncle Sam.

Friday morning we drove into Dallas to see the Perot Museum. It opened last year, and we had been looking forward to our visit. In addition to the regular museum exhibits, we chose to also see the special exhibit, "The World's Largest Dinosaurs", because as I've mentioned many times before, Will LOVES dinosaurs!

The highlight of the exhibit for Will was the Sports Run. You had your choice of 10 people/animals to race against, so Will got to race a T Rex. Definitely his favorite part of the day!

Claire enjoys any exhibit that is interactive (buttons to push, panels to raise, screens to touch), so she had a good time, too.

We had a hard time deciding on a place for lunch (so many options!), but finally settled on Twisted Root Burger. We all enjoyed our food, then headed back to the hotel to nap/rest before driving over to my friend Lindsay's house for her family's annual 4th of July party. It was so good to see her, and the kids had a blast with the water guns and the inflatable slide.

4 - Claire's sweet teacher handed out Gigi's Cupcakes to her parent volunteers, and I shared with Claire and Will. Delicious!

9 - One night when Robert was out of town, the kids and I drove down our street to get the mail. I'm normally super strict about car seats, but I let them sit in the front seat for our short, slow drive to the mailbox. They were thrilled!

14 - We saw so many beautiful fields of wildflowers on our day trip to Santa Anna for a family reunion. Claire asked me to take a picture for her.

21 - Blanco BBQ is always a hit with our kids. On this night, there was a balloon artist walking around making things for the kids. Will asked for a T-Rex, and we were all amazed at what the artist created. Will was really careful with it - and I got the guy's card (would be so great for a party!).
We had about 12 church families in the area who volunteered to be host homes during BYBC week. We all had the same theme and activities (Weird Animals) and met for four nights, with the 5th day activities held at church the next Sunday morning.

One of the host homes was down the street from us, which was fun and convenient! Claire was old enough to fully participate this year, and I volunteered so that Will could come for a portion of the activities, too. I was a crew leader, which means that I had a group of about 5 kids that I supervised as we went around to each of the different stations. I loved getting to spend time with other kids from our church and our neighborhood and help them learn about Jesus and how much He loves them! Each night Robert came over after work to help out where he could, and usually, to take Will home a little early (he got restless halfway through).
